Ducks Get Early Jump

Rick Morgan

Oregon opened their 2007-2008 basketball season with a 3-0 run through the World Vision Invitational tournament held at McArthur Court over the three-day weekend. The Ducks opened with a fast paced 100-70 opening victory over Pepperdine, followed by a comfortable 80-64 win against Pacific.

The tournament played out just as the Ducks had hoped, using the first two sessions to work out the early bugs and be ready to face Western Michigan - the Mid American Conference preseason favorite - on the third night of the event.

The Broncos used a physical second half to narrow Oregon's 16-point halftime lead to six point halfway through the second half. Given their first opportunity to seize control of a close game in the late stages, the Ducks did so, using a clutch 5-6 from the line down the stretch to clinch the win.

Malik Hairston was named the tournament MVP on the strength of his three-night line - 66 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. His 29 points Monday against Western Michigan was his career high. Maarty Leunen and Tajuan Porter joined Hairston on the all tournament team.

Head coach Ernie Kent offered his assessment after getting out of the gate 3-0. "We are playing at a higher intensity now then we were at this point last season. these were three good wins for us. Tomorrow is a well-earned day off, and now we're just going to get ready for Portland."
