Tamika Nurse swished two free throws with 6 seconds remaining to give the Ducks a 66-64 lead over the Washington Huskies, then Taylor Lilley intercepted a cross court pass as the Huskies hurriedly tried to set up for a last second shot Saturday afternoon at McArthur Court.
It was almost certainly Nurse's finest game of her career. A hesitant shooter, Nurse used her quickness to find open lanes to drive and was more assertive in establishing her outside jumper, to the tune of a season high 17 points and also contributed a team high eight rebounds and six assists as the Ducks fended off a ten-point deficit in the first half and a nine-point deficit in the second half to complete the week-end sweep of the Washington schools.
"Tamika scoring 17 was huge for us," said Oregon coach Bev Smith. "That takes the pressure off of other players. We feel very confident with her at the line. I liked the way she played today. She was very relaxed. She had an easy demeanor, and her leadership is very important."
Taylor Lilley once again was the leading scorer for the Ducks, netting 20 points on 8-16 from the floor.
As they had two nights before against Washington State, the Ducks were able to establish a significant advantage on the boards, out rebounding the Huskies 40-29. Oregon also built a 28-18 advantage on points in the paint, despite losing post Ellyce Ironmonger to injury in the first half.
The win improved Oregon's record to 10-8 on the season and to 4-3 in conference play.
"I've never been more scared in my life," Nurse said of her game winners. ".I just had to calm down, and think that I've done it 1,000 times before."
The sweep of the Washington schools was the first since 2006 and senior guard Kaela Chapdelaine saw signs of progress in her young team.
"We showed our identity today, she said. "We didn't quit. We were working hard from start to finish, and showed great poise and aggressiveness. We stuck with it right to the end."
"A lot of young teams would buckle under this type of pressure and physicality, but we responded well and I think we are growing as a team."
The Ducks are on the road for two straight weekends now, first to visit the SoCal schools to complete the front nine of the Pac-10 season, then heading to the desert to open the second half of the conference season. Stanford (Feb 07; 7:00 pm) and California (Feb 09; 1:00 pm) are the next to visit Mac Court.
