Jeremiah Masoli's return at quarterback sparked Oregon to a 43-19 thrashing of the Washington Huskies Saturday afternoon in Seattle. It was the six consecutive win for the Ducks in the Northwest rivalry and each has been by 20 points or more.
After three weeks off following the knee injury he suffered against Washington State, Masoli allowed that "it did take a couple of series to get my feet under me. You can tell the difference when you haven't played and you have a bye week. We were a little rusty but great teams respond."
The Huskies opened the scoring with a field goal late in the first quarter. But as they have been able to count upon all season long, it was the defense and special teams that jump started the Ducks. As the second quarter got under way, Oregon's defense sacked Washington's multi-threat quarterback Jake Locker to force a punt.
Tight end Rory Cavaille back from a broken clavicle lined up on the right side of Oregon's punt return rush unit and found a seam and smothered the punt attempt. As the ball caromed around the end zone, several Ducks had opportunities to recover but finally Tyrell Irvin gained control to get Oregon on the board.
On the point after attempt the Ducks lined up in their unbalanced formation and when Washington didn't reset their defense quickly, back up quarterback Nate Costa called for the snap and converted the two-point try with a keeper.
With Masoli back as the starter after he had directed the Oregon attack at UCLA, Costa would later convert a first down that led to a touchdown on a fake field goal.
That trickery came on the heels of a goal line stand by the Oregon defense that was capped by an interception in the end zone by Javes Lewis. Taking over on their own 20, Masoli drove the team deep into Washington territory and after Costa converted the first down on the fake field goal, Masoli finished the scoring drive with a one yard keeper to give Oregon a 15-3.
Washington converted a 43 yard field goal on the last play of the first half to narrow the margin to nine points.
Oregon struck quickly in the second half, driving 53 yards in three plays with Masoli scoring from three yards out to give the Ducks a 22-6 lead.
Stepping up the offensive tempo significantly in the third quarter, Masoli connected with D.J. Davis on a 16 yard scoring pass on Oregon's next possession to effectively end the Husky hopes for the day.
A fumble recovery put the Ducks back in business on the Washington 31. Masoli blasted through the Husky defense for 26 yards then handed off to LaMichael James for the final five yards and the touchdown.
Oregon's defense surrendered their first sustained drive and score since the start of Pac-10 play when Locker engineered an 80 yard drive capped by Chris Polk's one yard touchdown.
Despite that drive and another touchdown allowed late in the fourth quarter, the Duck defense was able to hold Locker in check most of the afternoon, logging four sacks and never allowing the Washington quarterback to break containment to scramble for positive yards.
"I said going in he's the scariest we play against just because when things break down he can take off and go. You got to make sure you keep him inside and our guys did a great job of not letting him hurt us," said Oregon head coach Chip Kelly.
LaMichael James wasted no time in responding for Oregon. Taking Masoli's hand-off, the redshirt freshman running back tore through the Husky front four, made a cut to his left leaving a linebacker and a safety in his wake on a 56 yard touchdown scamper.
James finished the day with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Masoli added 54 rushing yards and a pair of scores with his 11 carries and completed 14 of 22 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.
"This is a true team," said Kelly. "It's not an offense, it's not a defense, it's not just one aspect of it. It's everyone contributing . it's a neat thing to be around to be honest with you."
"I think we played really fast in the third quarter and that was kind of by design. We practice that way. What you are seeing on the field on Saturdays is exactly how we practice during the week. It because of how we practice that we can play that kind of game."
With the win Oregon's record improves to 6-1 for the season and 4-0 in conference, setting the stage for Saturday's highly anticipated match-up with seven time defending Pac-10 champion USC.
