Women's Tennis 3-1 In Pac-10 Play
The Oregon women's tennis team is negotiating uncharted waters this season under second year head coach Paul Reber. Their 6-1 victory over Arizona earlier in the month was their first in conference play in two years. This past weekend, the Ducks - who are presently ranked 60th, knocked off both of the Washington schools at the Student Tennis Center.
Sunday's match against the Cougars was a clean sweep. Each of Oregon's doubles teams made short work of claiming the point, 8-1, 8-3, 8-3. Four of the six singles matches were strait set victories for the Ducks.
Washington State was ranked #38 coming into the match and the momentum of that victory positioned the Ducks well when #35 Washington came calling on Monday.
In the early going it was a little tighter for the Ducks. Stefanie McFarlane and Ana Celia Olivos at #3 were upended to open doubles play. On center court, Oregon's #1 pair had a better go of it, winning 8-3. That put the doubles point in the hands of the #2 pair Claudia Hirt and Carmen Seremeta. Trailing 6-5, that ladies rallied back for a 9-8 victory in a tie-breaker.
With the doubles point securely in their pocket, Seremeta, McFarlane, Olivos and Celine Rolly picked up four singles points to give the Ducks the match 5-2.
Rolly's 6-4, 6-2 victory over her 30th ranked foe was the second ranked opponent she defeated in as many matches. The victory improved her season record to 10-8 as the Ducks #1 single. Seremeta needed three sets, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 to improve her team leading singles record to 12-6.
With the sweep of the schools from north of the Columbia, Oregon improved its season record to 10-8 overall and 3-1 in Pac-10 play.
The ladies are off to Los Angeles to face off with USC and UCLA before returning home to close out the Pac-10 season with a pair of matches with the Bay Area schools.
