 Team Stunts

On With The Show

It was a clean sweep for the Ducks in the first proper home competition for the Team Stunts & Gymnastics squad Sunday at McArthur Court. The hosts of a three way meet against Azusa Pacific and Ohio State placed first in each of the five events held in the contest.

Head coach Felecia Mulkey was both pleased with the result and that finally there was something for the sporting public to witness. While the Ducks have made a couple of halftime exhibition appearances for basketball fans there had been no opportunity for the wider public to take a look at the sport.

"To have 1,200 people at our first event is amazing," said the head coach. "The fans really answered. We like everyone to be around and cheering, we feed off of that."

Five matches on the road before the debut home appearance saw the Ducks claim a trio of first place finishes, including the USA West Coast Collegiates the week before, so Mulkey was ready for the curtain to fall in Eugene.

"I went to bed at 12:30 last night, but then I woke up at 4:15 a.m. and haven't had any sleep since," Mulkey said. "I have been playing out this meet all day in my head. I know my team reflects me, so I tried to keep it together. They did such an amazing job today, it made all the stress worth it. I can't wait to do it again."

Those who set aside the 2 hours to watch the introductory offering saw elements of traditional cheer but with a heavy dose of gymnastics. A series of compulsory stunts -"Baskets", "Pyramids", and "Tumbling" - using a skill specific combination of athletes set the stage for a freestyle "Team" event with everyone having a role.

Scoring is by a panel of five judges.

In their first season of competition the majority of the schedule is away from Eugene and the Ducks have one remaining home appearance, the Northwest Invitational meet on March 07 at McArthur McCourt.

High Flying Ducks Win Oregon Invitational                                                      Head Coach Felicia Mulkey Checks Scoreboard

Oregon's newest team claimed second place in the first ever intercollegiate Team Stunts & Gymnastics competion held last weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.

Added to the mix nearly when Oregon reinstated baseball, head coach Felicia Mulkey spent three years assembling the squad and collaborating with other programs around the nation to develop the meet format employed by the athletes.

The Ducks will play host to two meets this spring. Ohio State, Georgia and Western Azusa will join the Ducks for the Oregon Invitational on February 21, then on March 7, Oregon will host Cal Poly and Western Oregon in the Northwest Invitational.

The team will also offer a demonstration during halftime of the Oregon/California game on Feb 20.

The Oregon stunts and gymnastics team placed second with a score of 234.44 at the inaugural National Competitive Stunts and Tumbling Association meet held at Kennsaw State University. Maryland, which added competitive cheer as a varsity sport in 2005, won the event with a score of 243.66. Total scores are out of a possible 266 points.

Quinnipiac took third with 213.93 points and Georgia placed fourth with 177.35 points to round out the Division I competition.

In Division II, Fairmont State (229.15) defeated Fort Valley State (163.59).

"I am so proud of my team, to do so well in something that is so new," said head coach Felecia Mulkey. "All of the coaches here put in so much time to create this meet format and our organization. It was very rewarding to see it run so smoothly and see our teams really enjoy the competition and experience."

In the five round competition - stunts, pyramids, baskets, tumbling and team routine - Oregon placed first once and second four times.

Oregon won the pyramid competition, nailing its optional portion after scoring high in the compulsory round.

Maryland won the stunts round, baskets round, tumbling portion and team routine. Oregon placed second in those four rounds. Quinnipiac was third in all five rounds and Georgia was fourth in each round.

The NCSTA meet was the first ever to feature the organization's meet format and scoring system. The format features not only the traditional team routine at the end of the competition, but four rounds that focus on the specific skills and abilities that make up the sport.
