Ducks Claim Series Finale

Alicia Cook held California to two hits and a single sixth inning run in leading the Ducks to a 4-1 win at Howe Field Saturday over the 22nd ranked Bears. Hit in the eye by a batted ball earlier in the week, Cook was not expected to be available for the weekend set against the Bay Area schools.

After Oregon's defense betrayed pitcher Melissa Rice in Friday's series opener and California spanked the Ducks 6-1 on Saturday, it was a welcome chore to hand the ball to the senior ace.

Rice held Stanford scoreless for four innings before the defense unraveled to allow an unearned run in the fifth and sixth innings. Mustering only five hits against Stanford's ace, Missy Penna, Oregon's offense never threatened so when the Cardinal tacked on four more runs in the seventh it was mostly for show.

Against California on Saturday, Freshman Brittany Rumfelt was touched for three runs in the first inning as the Bears cruised to a 6-1 victory.

Loveena Chaput's double in the sixth inning drove in Sari-Jane Jenkins for Oregon's only run.

On Sunday, the Ducks scored four runs on five hits in the third inning. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases, then Sari-Jane Jenkins drove in the first with a fielder's choice. Cortney Kivett plated another run with a single to right and with two outs Loveena Chaput pushed Oregon's last two runners across the plate with a double.

With a six run lead, Cook mixed the speed of her pitches well and used her curve to cruise through the Bear lineup. The complete game victory improved her season record to 15-10.

This coming week, UCLA visits Howe Field for one and Washington comes in for three to close out the 2008 conference schedule.

Ducks Host #1 ASU, Defending Champs Arizona

Over the past weekend Oregon's softball team hosted the #1 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils and the 8th ranked and two-time defending national champion Arizona Wildcats. In the face of that daunting challenge, Kathy Arendsens's ladies gave a solid account of themselves.

A seventh inning home run by All-American Kaitlin Cochran allowed the Sun Devils to escape with a 3-2 in Friday's opening game.

Sophomore Blair Williamson went 2 for 3 and sparked a two run fifth inning for the Ducks to erase an early 2-0 deficit. Six runners left on base hurt the Oregon cause and allowed Cochran's solo blast in the top of the seventh to be the game winning hit.

On Saturday the 8th ranked Wildcats scored three runs in the opening frame and added a run each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Oregon could manage only one hit against Arizona's All- America pitcher Taryne Mowatt, who struck out 12 of the Oregon hitters she faced.

On Sunday, the Ducks turned the tide, winning their first conference game of the season 3-2 over the Wildcats on the shoulders of centerfielder Neena Bryant. Turning on the first pitch she saw for a three run home run the team's third batter in the line-up gave the Ducks a 3-1 lead.

Senior Alicia Cook struck out a season high 8 Wildcats and survived some seventh inning dramatics before coming away with the victory. A Wildcat single after Cook struck out the lead off batter was followed by a 20-minuite rain delay. After the tarp was removed and play resumed another Arizona single put runners on first and second. Cook coaxed the next batter into a fly-out to left field but then walked the following hitter to load the bases.

With the game on the line, Cook jammed the next batter into a ground ball to third baseman Joanna Gail, who recorded the force at third to end the game.

After the weekend series, Oregon's record now stands at 1-5 in conference and 26-16 overall.

Conference play continues as Oregon heads to the Bay Area for a game with California on Friday and then Stanford on Saturday and Sunday. Next home action for the Ducks will have Portland State coming to Howe Field on April 30. First pitch is at 4:00 pm.

Beavs Bop Duck 7-4

A late rally from a 7-1 deficit wasn't in the cards for the Ducks as Oregon State held on for a 7-4 victory in the first of this year's Civil War match ups.

The Beavers used the long ball to build that lead. Cambria Miranda went deep with one on base for the visitors and Audrey Rodderfeld went deep for three to pretty much seal the deal.

And it was the long ball brought Oregon back to life in the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Blair Williamson led off the inning by pulling a solid single into right field. One out later Ashley Kivett turned an outside pitch into a two-run dinger over the right field wall and the Ducks were within striking distance.

A walk and a fielder's choice brought the Ducks down to their last out, but also brought Oregon's leading hitter, centerfielder Neena Bryant to the plate. Bryant had just missed a home run by a couple of feet to straightaway center field in a previous at bat and she put another great swing on a pitch, sending it into the gap for a stand-up double, driving in Sari-Jane Jenkins. Loveena Chaput followed with a single to right, but Bryant was held at third base. Joanna Gail was struck out to end the threat.

The Ducks banged out 8 hits but left seven runners on base and saw their conference record slip to 0-3, 25-14 overall. And the challenge ahead is daunting, #1 Arizona State and the two-time defending national champion Arizona Wildcats will be at Howe Field this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Ducks Start Pac-10 Play

On the diamond, Oregon's softball team concluded the annual Cascade Clash with a clean sweep, celebrating the start of spring break with four straight wins. The weekend before had seen the Ducks dispatch Northern Illinois and Mississippi Valley State before being rained out against Utah State. When action resumed this past Sunday, the Ducks were facing the Bengals from Idaho State. Melissa Rice and Brittany Rumfelt combined to toss a no-hitter at the visitors in the first game. Neena Bryant and Joanna Gail each went deep as the Ducks cruised 8-0 in a game that was shortened to five innings.

In the nightcap, Alicia Cook struck out six and allowed one hit in her five innings of work. Working the final two innings, Rumfelt struck out two more and didn't give up a hit and the Ducks prevailed 2-0.

Once again it was Bryant lighting the fuse for Oregon, singling sharply to open the third inning, then stealing second base. Monique Fuiava doubled Bryant home for the game's first run and Joanna Gail drove Fuiava home with single down the left field line.

Cook - and then Rumfelt - took it from there.

Tuesday afternoon the Ducks took a pair from UC Davis 7-3 and 2-0 to complete the clean sweep of the Clash. And again it was Bryant who started the fireworks, smoking a pitch over the right field fence in her first at bat of the opening game.  In the fourth inning she turned on an inside pitch to clear the left field wall, giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

Oregon put five runs across the plate in the sixth inning to break the game open, and ace Alicia Cook struck out six while allowing the Aggies three runs on four hits to pick up the 2-0 victory.

Melissa Rice walked only one UC Davis batter and turned in a four hit shut out in the nightcap. Bryant drove in the game's first run with a double to left field, bringing in Courtney Kivett. Joanna Gail's solo blast in the fourth closed out the scoring.

For the day, Bryant was a combined 5-for-6 with four RBIs, three runs scored, two home runs and one double. Bryant continues to lead the team in batting average (.411), home runs (8) and runs batted in (32) and she has yet to make an error in the field.

Proud owners of an eleven game winning streak as they open conference play, the Ducks first travel to Seattle to take on the Huskies on Friday before spending Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles to face the Bruins twice. Oregon's next home action will be Wednesday at 4:00 pm when they host the Beavers at Howe Field
