Maarty Leunen's career high 32 points led the Oregon past the Oregon State Beavers 80-68 Sunday night at Gill Coliseum, completing the Civil War sweep for the Ducks. Leunen was a stellar 8-10 from the floor (7-8 3pt.) and 9-12 from the line as time and time again he sank clutch shots to keep the Beavers from seizing any momentum in a game that was energetically contested throughout.
Oregon opened up an 11 point lead seven minutes into the first half as Leunen, Bryce Taylor and LeKendric Longmire were able to get open looks out of Oregon's transition game.
The Beavers responded with a 15-5 run to close the gap to a single point with just under six minutes in the first half. Twice before the break, the Ducks were able to rebuild the lead to six but each time Oregon State rallied, finally earning a tie at 32 before Bryce Taylor's free throw with 0:03 remaining gave Oregon a one point halftime lead.
Oregon State's Marcel Jones hit the opening bucket of the second stanza to give the Beavers a narrow lead.
Sandwiched around two Leunen treys, OSU's Calvin Haynes hit for a two and a three and Jones hit a trey to give the Beavers their largest - and last - lead at 42-39.
Another Luenen three-ball tied the game at 42, and after a Tajuan Porter lay-up, Leunen hit another to push Oregon's lead to five at the 15:00 mark.
The Beavers would narrow the gap to three points on a couple of occasions but each time they would get close, Leunen had the answer, first at 55-52 with 8:00 to go, then again 68-65 with 3:00 left.
After the latter, Oregon raced to an 11-point lead, capped by a Bryce Taylor dunk, then the Ducks sealed the victory down the stretch from the foul line.
LeKendric Longmire - in perhaps his best showing of the season - contributed 14 points on 6-6 from the floor and Taylor added 13.
"The game was just as we expected," said Oregon coach Ernie Kent. "These games really do throw records out the window. They are just such battles. I thought they played extremely hard, they played aggressive. They shot the ball well, they stayed in attack mode. They really made us play and bring our game up. So to get another victory, this was a tough, tough win for us. I am very pleased . just to come down here and have the pressure of what's at stake, and have the pressure on trying to beat a team that hasn't won a game, the pressure of the rivalry, the pressure of needing to win a game. I thought from that perspective, I was real proud of how they played."
The loss extended Oregon State's conference losing streak to 16 and increases the possibility they will become the first team in Pac-10 history to go 0-18 in conference play.
Oregon improved to 7-9 in conference (16-12 overall) and kept alive their NCAA tournament hopes, with Arizona and Arizona coming into Mac Court to finish the conference slate.
