Out of the Pac

Barely 3-2 last week puts the record for the season at 24-11 - and the fun is just beginning. A number of teams w/ byes or non-conference tilts moves the attention away from the conference race for a week. But first we take a look back at last Saturday's games...

California 31 - Oregon 24 (Pick: Oregon 47-32)

The cliché that it is a game of inches was soundly reproved in a number of ways - a field goal ruled inches outside an upright that was cleared by thirty feet, Dixon's tipped pass that would have been one Jonathan Stewart pancake away from six more points, and of course the touchback that ended the game. The Ducks remain their own worst enemy and generally once teams start to be so, they remain so. Given the results below, the Ducks better worry less about hard work and character than intelligence and technique.

USC 27 - Washington 24 (Pick: USC 55-17)

Every time you think the Huskies are toast, they do something to rekindle the thought they could throw a monkey wrench into the conference race. For their part, after playing their best game of the season in the Coliseum, the Trojans again looked shaky on the road and that makes this a real mixed emotion result for anyone wearing green and yellow. or orange and black.

Arizona State 41 - Stanford 3 (Pick: Arizona State 38-17)

At least the Saturday success of the local liquor stores remains unthreatened.

UCLA 40 - Oregon State 14 (Pick:UCLA 35-21)

. and in Corvallis

Arizona 48 - Washington State 20 (Pick: WSU38-27)

The Wildcats seem to be following the Husky template. showing periods of strong play when much of their performance this season has been severely lacking. One is left to wonder how much of the inconsistency is due to the learning curve of a new offensive scheme implemented in the off season or draws its schizophrenia elsewhere. Either way, not a team that makes life particularly enjoyable when working through these prognostications.

Week 6

Arizona @ Oregon State

It would be really fun to see the Beavers put their troubles behind them for a day and smack the Wildcats, but given all that has been filling the pages of the state's newspapers and message boards, that isn't a likely occurrence. Not to mention the sorry tone of voice found in those more closely involved. Wildcats 35 - duhBeavs 13.

Stanford @ USC

There is no reason for this game to actually be played. None. If this Stanford team played SC 100 times, they would lose 102. Trojans 63 - Beetle Kill 10.

Arizona State @ Washington State

Only if it snows - not to equate Pullman w/ Hades - do the Cougs find a way to win this one. ASU is scoring enough points to exploit WSU's suspect defense to score in the high 30's in the least. Whatever offense WSU has been able to muster, it hasn't been enough to overcome such a deficit. Dennis Erickson gets revenge for the thumping he took last year when he brought Idaho to Martin Stadium. ASU 42 - WSU 28

Notre Dame @ UCLA

Speaking of Hades - pretty much describe Notre Dame's play and their season doesn't it. More of the same. much, much more of the same. UCLA 32 - Dulled Domers 13.
