Ducks End Home Season With Split

Oregon's home lacrosse season ended Sunday with a convincing 20-3 triumph over St. Mary's. For eight Oregon seniors - the first class of players recruited to establish the program by head coach Jen Larson, it wias a bittersweet exit to their careers. One day earlier a disapointing 12-8 defeat that left Larson frustrated. Citing a lack of focus against the undefeated Bears, Larsen allowed that Sunday's easy victory was "just what we needed" to send the eight graduates off in style.

California jumped to a 7-3 halftime lead and though the Ducks would score three unanswered goals to open the second half, the Golden Bears responded with four straight goals of their own to ice away the victory.

In Sunday's finale it was Oregon who was the aggressor. Jen May, Lindsay Killian and Jana Bradley each scored hat tricks for the Ducks. Juniors Ilsa van den Berg and Casey Rector added two goals apiece. Oregon also forced 20 turnovers and out shot the Gaels 45-13.

The 19th ranked Ducks improved to 10-5 on the year and 2-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and will finish their season on the road. The Ducks play at Vermont on Friday, and will play at New Hampshire on Sunday before concluding the 2008 campaign at the MPSF tournament in Berkeley starting April 30th.

Ducks No Match for North Carolina
Rick Morgan

After benchmark victories against the 18th and 11th ranked teams in the country, Oregon's lacrosse team was no match for traditional powerhouse North Carolina Tuesday night at Pape` Field. The seventh ranked Tar Heels erased a one goal deficit 0:41 seconds into the second half then scored five goals in just under seven minutes to pull away from the Ducks 14-9.

"At the end, possession was key, and we couldn't get that back," Oregon head coach Jen Larsen said.

A 6-3 advantage in second half draw controls helped North Carolina maintain possessions, as did a 13-5 advantage in fouls called.

"North Carolina went into stall," Oregon senior Jana Bradley said. "We had to push out and not play our normal defense, so we were exhausted. That was kind of the breaking point for us."

Alex Breiner, Ilsa van den Berg and Jana Bradley each scored a pair of goals for the Ducks, who saw a six-game winning streak snapped as their season record fall to 6-2.

Goalkeeper Anna Poponyak faced 27 shots and was credited with six saves.

"We need to rest our legs," said Larsen when asked to look ahead to Sunday's 3:00 pm match with Columbia. "We've had a long couple days with two games in Southern California... they (players) are in the middle of dead week going into finals so they need to be studying... we'll give them a rest and then regroup from there."
