The Oregon Duck rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Loyola Marymount 3-2 (19-25, 28-26, 24-26, 25-19, 15-8) Friday evening at Matthew Knight arena. By all rights the Ducks probably should have been swept by the feisty Lions.
From the get-go Loyola Marymount was aggressive on the attack, keeping Oregon’s defense on its heels and mostly kept it that way through the first three sets.
Leading 24-20, Oregon surrendered four straight points to the Lions to send the set into extra time. Two set points proved fruitless before the Ducks were able to sip into the break 1-1.
Loyola Marymount was again fearless in set three, staving off a string of three straight Oregon points that gave the Ducks a late 24-23 lead with before taking the 2-1 advantage with three straight points of their own.
The tide finally turned Oregon’s way trailing 18-19 rattled off six straight to grab a commanding lead and then closed out the set on a service error.
With momentum in hand, the Ducks strung together a pair of six point runs to avoid the upset.
The Ducks out hit Loyola Marymount .292 to .192 with Lindsey Vander Weide leading the way with 15 kills. Join her in double digits were Ronika Stone (12) and Willow Johnson (11),
The Ducks improved to 3-1 on the year and will look to sweep the Oregon Classic with a noon match against Northern Illinois.
