Porter Leads Ducks Past CSU Don Smalley
It wasn't the offensive showcase that Oregon fans saw in their first two games, but after coming off an 8-23 season, Oregon will take all the wins it can get.
Tajuan Porter led three other Ducks in double figures with 23 points as Oregon took the championship game of the BTI Classic with a 68-55 win over Colorado State. Porter was named the tournament MVP. The 5-6 senior was 8-for-17 from the field, including 5-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Teondre Willliams and LeKendrick Longmire each scored 11 and Joevan Catron added 10 points and nine rebounds for the 3-0 Ducks. Andy Ogide led the Rams with 17 points.
"It was three different styles of play," coach Ernie Kent said of the BTI Tip-Off Classic. "In the first game, (our) pressure created a lot of turnovers. In the second game we saw a 1-3-1 zone trap and we had to execute and still scored 90-plus points and then tonight, we played a team that really wanted to control the tempo of the game and shorten it."
Oregon started to distance itself from the Rams midway through the first half when Porter nailed a three to give the Ducks a 22-14 lead with 8:36 left before the break. The home team went into the locker room with a 36-27 lead.
The Ducks defense really concentrated on shutting the Rams down in the beginning of the second half. Colorado State scored just four points six minutes into the second half and Oregon was able to build its lead to 49-31 thanks to another three from Porter with 14:21 left.
"We haven't reached our offensive or defensive potential," Porter said. "We have our spurts, but we still have a long ways to go."
Oregon was able to get out in transition and run in the first two games of the BTI Classic by defeating Winston-Salem State 94-43 on Friday and UC Davis 95-64 on Saturday. But the Rams of Colorado State knew they wouldn't be able to outgun the Ducks, so they tried to outlast the Ducks. That strategy didn't work either.
"We're not going to have any nights off," Catron said. "These three wins here were important to get things off on the right start and get the season rolling."
Oregon admittedly has a chip on its shoulder after last season's dismal year and according to Catron, the Ducks have something to prove.
"Last year was terrible," he said. "But I think we're getting back to the way Oregon teams off the past played. It was on all of us. Even the new guys have something to prove."
The Ducks will have a full week of practice before getting another chance to prove themsleves. They will head north to Portland to take on the Pilots Saturday for a 7 pm tipoff. |
